Understanding Your Headaches
Headaches have different causes, and the right approach starts with identifying the type of headache you may be experiencing.
Headaches That Start in the Neck
Cervicogenic headaches originate from a problem in the neck. They may occur alongside restricted neck movement or pain brought on by certain neck positions. For appropriately assessed patients, hands-on treatment and targeted exercise may help reduce symptoms.
Tension-Type Headaches
Often described as pressure or a tightening sensation around the head, tension-type headaches can occur alongside neck and shoulder tenderness. We evaluate these areas and consider factors such as prolonged sitting, stress, and sleep habits when discussing care.
Migraines With Neck Discomfort
Migraine is a neurological condition that may involve throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light or sound. Neck discomfort can accompany migraine, but that does not mean the neck is causing it. We can assess associated muscle and joint concerns while supporting care coordinated with your medical provider. Evidence for spinal manipulation as a migraine treatment remains inconclusive.
What to Expect at Core
Your first visit begins with a conversation about when your headaches started, how often they occur, what they feel like, and any accompanying symptoms. We also review your health history, medications, previous evaluations, and daily routines.
Your examination may include neck mobility, muscle tenderness, and neurological checks when indicated. We explain our findings and discuss whether chiropractic care, another type of treatment, or further medical evaluation is the appropriate next step.
Care Built Around Your Findings
When a musculoskeletal component is identified, your plan may include:
Manual therapy: Targeted work for tight or tender muscles around the neck, shoulders, and upper back.
Joint mobilization or chiropractic adjustments: Selected when appropriate, after discussing benefits, risks, alternatives, and your preferences.
Therapeutic exercise: Individualized mobility and strengthening exercises for the neck and upper back.
Everyday guidance: Practical changes to your workstation, movement breaks, and sleep habits.
We track how you respond, including changes in headache frequency, intensity, and daily function, and adjust your plan accordingly.
When a Headache Needs Medical Attention
Call 911 or seek emergency care for a sudden, extremely severe headache, or a headache with new weakness, difficulty speaking, confusion, loss of vision, or fever with a stiff neck. New, worsening, or noticeably different headaches also warrant prompt medical evaluation.
